Paper Magic

Here are two simple paper tricks you can impress your friends with, and all you’ll need is paper, scotch tape, scissors and a book.

Balancing act

Challenge:  Tell your friends you can balance a book on the edge of a piece of paper.  “Can’t be done”, they’ll say. But this is how you can prove them wrong.

Take a 8 ½ inch X 11 inch piece of paper and roll it up lengthwise (on the 11 inch side), into a tube shape. Tape your tube with scotch tape.  Set it on a flat surface and place a book on top of the tube. Voila! You have balanced a book on the edge of piece of paper.

Coming through!

Challenge: Tell your friends that you can step through a piece of paper. “No way!” they’ll say.  But again, this is how you will be able to make good on your claim.

  1. Take an 8 ½ inch X 11 inch piece of paper and fold it lengthwise (on the 11 inch side).
  2. Along the open edge of your paper (opposite to the folded edge), cut 3-inch slits into your paper at one-inch intervals, leaving about one inch uncut at the folded edge. When you have finished your paper should have 11 flaps.
  3. Turn your paper around so the folded edge is now facing you.  Now cut 3-inch slits down the middle of each of the 11 flaps, again leaving one inch uncut at the open edge.
  4. Once this is done, carefully unfold the paper and lay it flat.
  5. Being careful not to cut the 1-inch top and bottom edges of the paper, cut along the fold of your paper.
  6. Presto! You should now have a large loop, and proof that you can step through a piece of paper.
